The Giants have their championship titles to be proud of. They won the World Series five times. They also have 20 National League titles. Finally, they have won the NL West Division six times.
They were one of the major league baseball teams that John B. Day and Jim Mutrie formed. The team goes by the name, the Gothams at first. It is a team under the National League. Day and Mutrie had another baseball team but in a different league. They also owned the Metropolitans, which is a team in the American Association.
The two started bringing their star players from the Metropolitans to the Gothams. This strategy brought the Gothams to win their first NL title in 1888. They did it again in 1889, only this time, they also manage to win the early version of the World Series.
Rumor has it that the team name changed to the Giants after Mutrie exclaimed the word in excitement as a compliment to his team who has beaten the Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants played in the Polo Grounds until 1957 when it moved to California and became the San Francisco Giants.
The Player’s League took a toll on the Giants. Most of it players joined the league. After that, Day had to sell controlling shares of the team to the Edward Talcott. Talcott then sold the team to Andrew Freedman. Freedman did not have a lot of fans. He had some misunderstandings with other owners and players. His best decision was to bring John McGraw on board. After a while, Freedman needed to sell the team to John T. Bush.
McGraw managed the team for thirty years. During his tenure, he led the team ten NL pennants and three World Series titles. He also made news when he refused to play the World Series in 1904 against the Boston Red Sox. According to some, McGraw did not feel like competing for it because he did not think much of the American League. This led to the formalization of the World Series in 1905, this time; the Giants played and won their first World Series title.
After that, the team went through some tough times. It would take a while before they could win the World Series. The win they long for came in 1921 and 1922. They defeated the Yankees in both instances. After that, the Yankees defeated them in 1923, while the Washington Senators defeated them in 1924.
In 1932, Bill Terry took over the management of the team. Terry led his team to three NL pennants. They also won the World Series in 1933. However, they failed to take it home in 1936 and 1937 after facing the New York Yankees.
Aside from the World Series, a notable victory of the Giants took place in 1951 when they defeated their primary rival team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Bobby Thomson made the shot heard around the world and gave the Giants a win over the Dodgers.
Their next World Series title came in 1954. It was their last as the New York Giants and their attempts as the San Francisco Giants were unsuccessful.
